Mike Longmire participated in a panel discussion as part of a class for Leadership Raleigh on November 9. Chief Harry Dolan of the Raleigh Police Department, Sheriff Donnie Harrison of the Wake County Sheriff’s Office, and Secretary Reuben F. Young of the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety also participated in the opening panel discussion. Mike Longmire provided a private sector security perspective to the discussion. Chief Dolan and Sheriff Harrison were part of the panel in 2010. Topics for the day included gangs and gang prevention, prisons and incarceration, probation, and post-incarceration programs.
The Leadership Raleigh program is in its twenty-seventh year. It is a group of approximately fifty up and coming leaders in the Raleigh business community who have committed to a year long program to learn more about the community and how they can contribute as leaders. Leadership Raleigh is the ideal program for preparing the leaders of tomorrow. During the nine-month program, participants get an in-depth view of community issues, develop leadership skills necessary to assume leadership roles, and are exposed to community involvement opportunities.
Leadership Raleigh is unlike other programs because it provides participants with the opportunity to meet and discuss issues with key community leaders. Participants study the qualities that make an effective leader, analyze individual leadership roles, and develop personal leadership styles and skills. They are then challenged to apply their talents by joining professional associations, civic clubs, public boards and commissions.
