Christine PetersonAs the Vice Chair of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business and Membership Services department, Christine Peterson, President, Risk Management Associates, attended the Chamber’s Summer Leadership Conference. This year’s conference was held in Pinehurst, NC, on August 19-21, 2014. The conference provided a format and opportunity to bring regional business leaders and government officials together to foster public/private cooperation and relationships that will support economic development and prosperity in the Raleigh area. The conference was led by Ed Willingham, President, First Citizens Bank, who is the 2014 incoming board chair.

The conference began with a focus on public education in the region, and attendees heard from Dr. Jim Merrill, Superintendent, Wake County Public School System and Christine Kushner, Chair, Wake County Board of Education. The primary and secondary education update was followed by an overview and impact for private higher education discussion that included Dr. Everett Ward, Interim President, Saint Augustine’s University, Dr. Debra Townsley, President, William Peace University, J. Rich Leonard, Dean, Campbell School of Law and Dr. Hope Williams, President, NC Independent Colleges and Universities. Dr. Randy Woodson, Chancellor, NC State University, led the discussion: The Next Generation Power Electronics National Manufacturing Innovation Institute – Exploring our Newest Frontiers.

Afternoon session provided attendees the opportunity to explore issues associated with:
• Modernizing Redistricting
• Selling a Smart Market
• Big Times for Big Data
• Finding the Smart Money
• Planning the Next Phase of Downtown
• Gigabit Internet Service in the Triangle
• Changing with the Times

Attendees were also able to meet the candidates running for office as Wake County Board of Commissioners and the North Carolina General Assembly.

On the second day of the conference, attendees were able to hear from Dr. Stephen Scott, President, of Wake Technical Community College who spoke about Wake Tech as Your Smart Business Partner followed by a Chamber Board of Director’s meeting and individual department meetings.
